Definition & Meaning of Depression

Stress is the “wear and tear” of our body’s experience. we adjust to our continually changing external and internal environment, it has physical and emotional effect on us and can create positive or negative feelings.
Health is viewed as our body’s state of physical well-being and emotional happiness. This occurs when our body maintains the balance between the demands made on us and our capacity and resources to meet those demands so that we remain healthy. Our physical and mental health is in a state of homeostasis.
Stress creates tension in this balanced state. It tips the scales. The result is deterioration in mental and physical health and well-being. Stress occurs when a demand made on a person and resources available to him respond to the demand. Demand could be real thing or perceived similarly resources can be real or perceived. In this context three important resources include:
· Physical Ability: health ,fitness, strength
· Intellectual Ability-Capacity for complex feeling and problem solving
· Emotional ability-accuracy ,identifying feelings
Stress is an adaptive response mediated by individual characteristics or psychological processes that is a consequence of any external actions tat places special physical or psychological demands upon a person. This definition has three interrelated dimension of stress
· Environmental demands, referred to as stressors that produced
· Adaptive response that is influenced by
· Individual differences.
Hans Seyle emphasized that both positive and negative response can trigger an identical stress response that can be beneficial or harmful and also noted that
1. Stress is not merely nervous tension
2. Stress can have positive consequences
3. Stress is not something to be avoided
4. The complete absence of stress is death
These points make it clear that stress is inevitable. Efforts need to be directed at managing stress, not at somehow escaping it altogether.

Kind of stress

Eustress

There is a good side of stress which is called Eustress. Good stress can have a positive impact on a person. This form of stress is achieved when brain and body feel challenged and want to extend itself in order to respond to the situation. This is caused when a person is as though he or she:
· Has ideas to the possible solutions to the challenge(“look at all these possibilities”)
· Has the resources (internal and external)to solve the challenge (“I can do it”)
· Has some control over what is happening (“I have choices”)
· Ha had sufficient rest between his or her challenges.
In response to this situation the body releases adrenaline and noradrenalin. Both of these hormones result is heightened perception, increased motivation and even increased physical strength. Eustress extends a person’s capacity to function (intellectually, physically, emotionally, and behaviorally)
